Lush, green tropical landscapes, incredible temples with towering gateways, tea, coffee and spice plantations, a vibrant arts, music and dance heritage, ancient healing therapies and gentle, welcoming people true to their traditions… South India will charm you in a myriad of ways!
South India is geographically, culturally and linguistically a completely different entity than the North – in fact, it could be a whole new country! Bound by the waters of the Arabian Sea to the West, the Indian Ocean to the South and the Bay of Bengal to the East, its history has been shaped by flourishing maritime trade connections and a relatively peaceful assimilation of foreign cultures and religions rather than by wars and invasions, as in the North. This, together with its tropical climate, has led to a more laid-back, relaxed vibe that makes traveling through the South a very enjoyable experience indeed.
The southernmost state of Kerala, situated on the Western coast, is blessed with fertile soil, plenty of water and abundant vegetation and is aptly called “God’s Own Country” for its gorgeous landscapes and agricultural bounty. Each of the five states that make up South India has its own language, dress, cuisine, festivals and traditions – a surefire recipe for a fascinating, immersive experience!

Late afternoon, a simple boat jetty past Kottayam, Kerala. It has been a long, diverse and rewarding trip, all these days from where we started, at the shores of the Bay of Bengal. But now the Arabian Sea is close, we just need to cross Lake Vembanad to reach our next destination, Purity, just on the opposite shore of the lake which forms an integral part of the famous Keralan backwaters. An excursion boat is readily moored and waiting for us. The captain welcomes us with the juice of some freshly cut coconuts and our, as always, caring guide Sahaj whips up some cold beers from the local shops for the crossing. We all embark and the captain sets course. Follows one of the most magical arrivals at a hotel we have ever experienced. The pace of the boat is slow, the sun is nearing sunset and reflecting in the lake, some Indian popular songs are softly playing on the boat’s stereo, the lake is vast and the opposite coast is only slowly shaping in the haze as we are approaching, we see all kinds of birds hovering above the lake in a last round before returning to their nests for the night, islands of floating plants and greens are passing by, captain lets some of us take the helm, closely watching, and we just enjoy the guided float into sunset towards what should turn out to be one of the most beautiful boutique hotel gems in Kerala.
